JCPA Congratulates President-Elect Obama

NEW YORK – Andrea Weinstein, chair of the Jewish Council for Public Affairs (JCPA), released the following statement today regarding the election of Barack Obama as the 44th president of the United States of America:

“JCPA would like to extend our sincerest congratulations to President-elect Barack Obama and Vice President-elect Joe Biden on their historic election victory. We also salute Senator John McCain and Governor Sarah Palin for their hard fought campaign. Senator McCain has served this country with honor and dignity. We look forward to his continued service.

There are a number of challenging issues facing the American public and the Jewish community is heavily engaged in addressing these vital concerns. As part of our commitment to work with all those who strive for tikkun olam at home and abroad, we are involved with advancing a lasting peace that will bring security and an end to suffering for Israelis and Palestinians, preventing the spread of nuclear weapons in Iran and elsewhere, rooting out terror while protecting individual and advocating to end the atrocities in Darfur.

On the domestic front, we are also working to advance civil and religious liberties, respect personal privacy including a woman's right to reproductive health, combat anti-Semitism at home and around the world and enact federal legislation to fight hate crimes, secure health care, eradicate hunger and homelessness, pursue initiatives that minimize our dependence on oil and deal with many other issues grounded in our Jewish values.

We look forward to working with the Obama Administration and the 111th Congress in these endeavors.”
